Patrick Vedlog

Patrick Vedlog is an independant musician based in Oslo, Norway. He plays the North-Indian bamboo flute, the bansuri, and has been learning Hindustani music since 2014. He has released three EPs on all major streaming platforms and regularly performs live.

Indian classical music is a genre which is very unknown to most people in Norway and therefore it's not a lot of demand for it. But Patrick has made it his objective to spread the beauty of Indian classical music in Norway. He has been performing since 2017 with different musicians, but mainly focused on stricly playing Indian Classical music. 

Indian Classical music is based on two main pillars, Raga and Tala. Raga being the melodic aspect and Tala being the rhythmic aspect. A standard performance consists of a vocalist or instrumentalist and a percussion player. The vocalist or instrumentalist plays Ragas which, to briefly explain, is the melodic structure which consists of different scales and moods to evoke distinct feelings to the listener and performer. There are romantic ragas, serious ragas, meditative ragas and so on. And to briefly explain Tala, it is a complex system of rhythms set in different rhythmic cycles. The whole idea of music in the view of Indian Classical music is that it is cyclical and that starts of extremely slow and builds up the tempo. A typical performance starts with no rhythms and can end up in 500 bpm. 

Originally Indian Classical music comes from the Hindu temples thousands of years ago, but have only gained reputation in the west the last 100 years.
